What is the duration of the dance year?
Our first day of classes is in early September, and we dance until our Year End Showcase in early May. Groups may also be asked to perform at Vesna (middle of May) & Folkfest (middle of August).
My child has never danced, what group would he/she start in?
Dancers older than our Beginners are grouped according to age, ability, attendance and attitude. Dancer placement is at the sole discretion of the instructors. Placement may be subject to change until choreography starts in October.
What fundraising is involved?
Each family is responsible for participating in fundraising activities as set up by the Club. The majority of our fundraising activities is centered around bingos.
Sonia’s is one of a privileged few charities that is a member of Saskatoon Twin Charities Inc.. As such, we hold voting rights and receive grant money each quarter in addition to the revenue we earn working bingos. Bingos are the club's main fundraising source of revenue. It pays for instructor fees, hall rent, storage fees, competition fees, costumes, etc. that are not covered by our dance fees. Bingos have proven to be the least amount of work in terms of organizing and the most amount of revenue. On average, we make $10,000 per year working Bingos plus approximately $750 per quarter in grant money. Parents must work a minimum of six (6) bingo shifts per dance season, or pay $100 per shift if they choose not to work a shift. Please read the "Bingos - How They Work" file at the end of this section.
We also hold one or two other fundraisers throughout the year, such as a raffle or supper event.
When will my child perform?
All groups (Beginners only if they are ready), as a club, participate at our two club competitions/festivals in Saskatoon and North Battleford in the spring. Some dancers also participate at a festival in Lloydminster. All groups also perform at our Year End Showcase. We also have dance opportunities at the Warman Open For Business Expo, a few seniors homes, Vesna, Folkfest, and Ukrainian Day in the Park. The dance groups for Vesna & Folkfest are chosen based on amount of dances requested, overall group commitment and availability of dancers. There is an expectation that dancers can be available for group dances outside of festivals due to choreography, although we do understand when families have other commitments.

Do I rent or own my costume?
Sonia's has a wonderful inventory of authentic costumes from Ukraine, and rents costumes to our dancers. A costume deposit and rental fee is required for each costume borrowed from the Club’s inventory. Costume deposits will be held and returned upon return of each costume borrowed. The amount of costume deposit and rental fee will be determined by the Club and varies by costume - dependent on rarity, elaborateness, number of pieces per costume, expense, and replacement cost of costumes. The rental fee for one costume can range between $15 and $40 for the season.
The purchase of shoes is each dancer’s responsibility, and will be determined by region performed each season. Tiny Tots, Beginner, and Junior dancers wear ballet flats (red for girls, black for boys).
Where and when do you dance?
We dance every Thursday night at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex Theatre in Warman. Some classes also utilize a second studio in the Communiplex.
Can I stay in the theatre/studio during class?
The Warman Home Centre Communiplex has ample space to wait outside the theatre that parents are welcome to visit in. Parent-Viewing sessions happen at various times throughout the year.
What is proper dance attire for class and why is it necessary?
Dancers should be dressed in ALL BLACK, body-clinging garments so the instructors can view the full body alignment. Loose-fitting clothing can hide small errors that will become habit if gone undetected. Snug garments also keep heat in against the body which helps muscles stay warm. Absolutely NO jeans or tight pants as the dancer can not move properly when restricted by tight clothing.
FEMALE dance attire shall include a body suit and tights/leggings, shorts, tights, or skirt or else dance pants/shorts and a snug t- shirt/tank top and red dance slippers with elastic. Hair must be off the face and tied back in a ponytail, bun, braid, or, if their hair is short, a headband.
MALE dance attire shall include a snug-fitting t-shirt with leggings and fitted shorts or fitted pants in stretchable material and black dance slippers or a full-footed black slipper.
Dancers must wear ballet slippers. Slippers must have elastics sewn across the top of the foot so that the slipper does not slip off the back of the heel. If there is no elastic, the dancer will not perform the steps properly and we do not want their slippers to fall off when dancing.
If dancers attend class without proper dance attire, they may be asked to sit out of their class.
